IoT Minute Episode 58: The Evolution of Remote Monitoring from Manual to Mobile to IoT

In this episode I use the example of “meter reading” to describe the evolution of remote monitoring.

It started with a very manual process of people capturing meter data on paper and later transcribing it into a computer system back at the office. The mobile revolution sped things up, reduced errors and used the magic of wireless to transmit data from the meter reader’s smartphone to a computer system back at the office. With the Internet of Things you put a sensor on the meter along with a SIM card to automatically stream reading back to the office computer system.
