End poverty in all its forms everywhere
Eradicating poverty is not a task of charity, it’s an act of justice and the key to unlocking an enormous human potential. Still, nearly half of the world’s population lives in poverty, and lack of food and clean water is killing thousands every single day of the year. Together, we can feed the hungry, wipe out disease and give everyone in the world a chance to prosper and live a productive and rich life.
Targets
Everyone can help to make sure that we meet the Global Goals. Use these targets to create action to end poverty in all its forms.
1.1 ERADICATE EXTREME POVERTY
By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25 a day.
1.2 REDUCE POVERTY BY AT LEAST 50%
By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.
1.3 IMPLEMENT SOCIAL PROTECTION SYSTEMS
Implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures for all, including floors, and by 2030 achieve substantial coverage of the poor and the vulnerable.
1.4 EQUAL RIGHTS TO OWNERSHIP, BASIC SERVICES, TECHNOLOGY AND ECONOMIC RESOURCES
By 2030, ensure that all men and women, in particular the poor and the vulnerable, have equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to basic services, ownership and control over land and other forms of property, inheritance, natural resources, appropriate new technology and financial services, including microfinance.
1.5 BUILD RESILIENCE TO ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DISASTERS
By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters.
1.6 MOBILIZE RESOURCES TO IMPLEMENT POLICIES TO END POVERTY
Ensure significant mobilization of resources from a variety of sources, including through enhanced development cooperation, in order to provide adequate and predictable means for developing countries, in particular least developed countries, to implement programs and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions.
1.7 CREATE PRO-POOR AND GENDER-SENSITIVE POLICY FRAMEWORKS
Create sound policy frameworks at the national, regional and international levels, based on pro-poor and gender-sensitive development strategies, to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions.
Thoughts
Eradicating poverty in all its forms remains one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. While the number of people living in extreme poverty dropped has by more than half since 1990, a significant number are still struggling to meet the most basic human needs. As recently as 2015, more than 700 million people continue to live on less than US$1.90 a day, while many lack food, clean drinking water and sanitation. Substantial growth in China and India has lifted millions out of poverty, but progress has been unevenly distributed. Women are still more likely to be poor than men due to less paid work, education, and property ownership. Improvement has also been limited in other regions, such as sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, which represent 80 percent of those living in extreme poverty. Increasing threats brought on by climate change, armed conflict and food insecurity, mean more work needs to be done lift people out of poverty. SDG 1 is a bold commitment to end poverty in all forms and dimensions by 2030. This involves focusing on the most vulnerable, increasing basic resources and services, and supporting communities affected by conflict and climate-related disasters. Up to 78 percent of the world’s poor live in rural areas and rely on farming to put food on their tables and make a living. With sensors and analytics we can improve agricultural efficiency and raise incomes by increasing crop yields while reducing production costs and the use of water and fertilizer.
