Windows Mobile was reaching “peak” form factor, units, innovation – you name it, as 2005 hit and Windows Mobile 5 was released. This was the ultimate mashup of the PDA and the Cell Phone – and it showed. Competitors like Nokia/Symbian, Palm with the Treo, and of course RIM with the Blackberry made up the competitive landscape.
We review some killer phones here at the Mobile Phone Museum, including the bizarre Motorola MPX. We’re joined by Todd Warren, who ran Engineering for Windows Mobile and the Mobile Communication Business and was a long-time veteran of Microsoft on the challenges of the time, especially in the benefits/burdens of leveraging other Microsoft code like Internet Explorer and Silverlight. Finally, a good recent clip of an interview with Steve Ballmer which is quite revealing. Everyone was chugging along without an iPhone or Android phone in sight!
